In Jacob Needleman’s only novel, Eliot Appleman, a teenage echo of himself living in Philadelphia in the 1950s, joins a group interested in magic.  Here he discovers he has mystical perceptive powers and becomes embroiled in a struggle between the impulses to use his powers to manipulate others under the influence of the charismatic Stephen Blake, or to bear others’ suffering and understand his own nature while learning from the mysterious Max Falkoner.
